Where we started
Back in 2004 we started working with the lovely people of the
Carbon Trust, an agency set up by the government to reduce carbon
emissions. We wanted to set up short and medium term strategies to
reduce our energy usage, carbon emissions and our general
impact on the environment. As a result we came up with a programme of initiatives to deliver
20% savings in our energy consumption. We've spent over £2m in the
last two years on a wide range of energy saving projects, and have
installed an Energy Policy across the company. You'll be pleased to know we've done more than putting out a few
recycling bins... Saving water
Aeration shower heads: delivering equivalent
shower performance but using only two thirds the water (these also
save on water and gas as less hot water is used). Water optimisers: significantly reducing water
usage from taps, urinals, cisterns etc. Liquid pool covers: reduces heat loss from pools
over night and at non busy times. Managing heat
Gas saving devices: treating the incoming gas
supply in increase burn efficiency Efficient burn condensing boilers: more efficient
and environmentally friendly heating systems introduced as part of
a longer term replacement strategy.
Buildings and equipment
Reducing electrical consumption: introducing
variable speed drive motors to all major building service plant and
equipment. Building management systems: introduction of a
stricter and more regular regime of audit and adjustmemt to ensure
timers and temperatures are maintained at their correct
levels. Building management systems: use of free cooling
overnight and during cold weather.
